Between the Seasons

Autumn is hanging out in our neighbourhood. The first glimpse was around 8 pm one evening when a few raindrops fell as I picked a few raspberries. Temperatures dropped, more rain fell, and I listened to it softly falling during the night. We are thankful for the moisture.

This weekend the two of us took a last overnight boating trip for the season, to Genoa Bay. Gray mist and gentle rain were the weather of the day on Saturday, but Sunday morning the mist wreathing the hills was soon burned off by the sun.

Golden light shone through paper thin leaves littering the forest floor.

Float houses are popular in much of the west coast. At the Genoa Bay Marina, a couple of them are for sale. I wonder how damp they would be in winter, though.

We hiked for a couple of hours on the hill above the marina. The trail began in shaded woods where ferns grow lush. We soon left the green behind for dry grassy outcroppings and the scent of warm pine. When we stood still, we heard the soft plink of dry needles falling to the ground.

More evidence of autumn's visit combined with the dry summer is seen in the glow of orange Garry Oak leaves.

Blue, blue water and sky signify September days to me. The earth radiates the heat stored up over the summer. Evenings cool rapidly. Shadows slant earlier. This time between the seasons celebrates the best of both summer and autumn.

Is autumn peeking into your neighbourhood?

  3. These are so gorgeous photos, Lorrie!! I Googled Vancouver Island, and you really do live in God's Country -- so beautiful there! I always enjoy your photography, and your boat trip and hike sound so nice. You're so right that this time celebrates the best of summer and autumn. I really love September. :)

Hope you have a good week!

    Hugs,

    Denise

  4. The temperature dipped here in town too...our furnace even came on which surprised us both!
We love Genoa Bay Marina and those float homes must be cool in the winter...especially when the docks are icy and snow falls.
It was a lovely bright sunny day today and we spent time on the beach with the grandchildren...collecting beach glass and exploring the seashore.

  6. Those look like the perfect autumn days. Glad you've had a little rain after all your heat. We have been thrown into the windy cold side of autumn but I dare say those lovely blue crisp days will return. Enjoy your last few boat journeys while you can. B x

  7. Autumn is very slowly peaking its head around here. But we are in South Europe, so summer likes to linger around a little bit longer. Your photos are magnificent though. Seems like the perfect time for a visit.

  9. That looks like a lovely getaway and a wonderful way to enjoy the in between season.
Here our temps are unseasonably cool. We found a few signs of autumn's approach on our walk through the woods yesterday. I am ready for it.

  10. Love your sound imagery of the needles pinging on the forest floor. Yes yes. Most noticeably the sun is setting earlier. This affords us athe opportunity to view the sunsets and drive the country roads for lovely light photo opportunities. I dress warmly morning and night, socks on in bed, but still have windows open

  12. Lorrie - yes, Autumn is starting to splash her paintbrush around (trying to sound like you!) At the higher elevations in Montana, some trees and bushes are turning red and yellow - it provides beautiful color for the rest of the landscape since the flowers are mostly long gone. This morning it was 38 degrees Fahrenheit ... I welcome the crisp mornings! Thank your for your lovely photos and prose. Have a great week!

  17. Hello,Lorrie,
Those photos are beautiful. So glad to see fresh autumn is arriving to your place!
I think I told you that studying English is my hobby. I like your expression"Golden light shone through paper thin leaves littering the forest floor".
Humid weather is still lingering here Nara Japan.
    Have a good week!

  18. We are in the "in-between" season here too Lorrie. The leaves have not completely started turning yet, but the cooler nights and mornings, bright skies (when there is no smoke ha!) and shorter days really speak well of autumn. My maple trees leaves are turning now, and I look forward to their fully red color. I loved your post, your descriptions of the joy you felt seeing the beauty around you, and the lovely time you and your husband had on your last boating trip of the season, what joy! Such a beautiful hike you took, and I too, love to listen to the noise of the forest.... although the plink of pine needles means lots of cleanup work around here, lol! We didn't get the rain you got, but I wish we had. Still hoping for it though! Hugs to you today :)

  22. Your Autumn beginnings are quite wonderful. The night air is cooling slightly here, but still summer in the air. In a way I am looking forward to Autumn days and the golden colors and light. We did have a small shower on Saturday evening, which was much welcomed.

  23. Looks like a nice outing, Lorrie. You were rewarded well with your hiking effort, too. We are seeing the leaves start to change down here, too. Cooler mornings and evenings are appreciated. Hope your week is going well.

  27. Such beautiful harbor shots! We've had daydreams about living on a float house -- but had the same concerns as you (it never got beyond the daydream stage -- we just love boats). We're hoping our overnight boat in Florida survived Ivan... our house did, but we don't have word on the boat yet.
